When the world was shutting up shop during the summer of 2008, we decided to start our PR consultancy firm in Dubai, UAE. We have survived the downturn and are raring to leap ahead in the world of communications.
The first challenge on hand seemed even bigger than the global economic crisis - the name. What should we call our firm and why. It was like naming a newborn baby. How would it reflect our personality and who we are? Will it ring a bell when people hear it? Finally, after mulling over several options, we decided to call ourselves – ‘White Water Public Relations’.

I was fortunate to enter the world of PR and communications in India, way back in 1996, May 26th to be precise. It’s been twenty long years since then.
My journey started with the Coke account and did learn some amazing PR strategies and game plans during the initial part of my career. However, the turning point in my life came in November 1996, when I was chosen to be part of the PRteam that handled Michael Jackson’s History tour of India.
I was awestruck at the show; this man was the master of perfection. Each nanosecond of his show was meticulously planned. This doesn’t happen overnight though, but comes with years of practice and undying passion for what you love to do. This event inspired me to pursue the world of PR.
Every brand that I worked on was different and what fascinated me and kept me going was their story – it was unique, like the human DNA. Whether it was Microsoft, Miss World, Damac Properties, Dulsco or Johnson Controls all taught me something new, each day.
When I moved to the UAE in 2001, the PR landscape was different; fledgling, it was still growing roots and was trying to consolidate itself as a formidable cousin of the advertising industry. However, there has been a paradigm shift in the world of communications since then, and today PR has become an integral part of a corporate’s communications framework.
There are over 200 nationalities that reside in the UAE. So, how do you reach out to them? One size fits all communications strategy doesn’t work anymore. Social media and digital platforms have redefined the way we communicate. So how do you reach out to your end customer?
Over the years, I have seen people conveying one message through PR, and a totally different message through social media. There is no synergy. In this case, both the campaigns are bound to fail or achieve limited success. A complete waste of time, efforts and money.

With scores of celebrities voicing concern about the welfare of thousands of #refugees, over 65 million, around the globe, internationally acclaimed fashion designer and artist Johny Dar recently launched a campaign called#JeansforRefugees, a global artistic collaboration dedicated to helping refugees all around the world. 'Jeans for Refugees', is an artistic fundraising initiative dedicated to helping refugees around the world, with all proceeds going to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
